In most businesses the expensive part of operations isn't the hard work. It is the in-between: the invoice typed from a PDF into the accounting system, the lead copied from an inbox into a CRM, the approval chased by email, the report rebuilt every Monday. Experienced people spend their mornings producing nothing new.
AI can now read, judge and draft well enough to take that work. But an AI that acts without limits is a liability, and one that has to be watched every second saves nothing. We started Dephrast to build the middle path: systems that do the work on their own, stop exactly where a person should decide, and keep a record anyone can check.

Hand the work to AI. Keep the decisions.
AI should execute the repetitive work. People should keep authority over consequential decisions: payments, sends, filings, anything that leaves the business.

Models judge. Code computes. You decide.
A model is good at reading and judgement, and bad at arithmetic. So models interpret, code computes anything with a right answer, and a person approves what matters.

Autonomy is earned, not assumed.
Every system starts supervised. It takes on more only as its own record shows it can, task by task, and it is never switched on at launch.

Refused by name, never guessed.
When a fact is missing, the right answer is to stop and say which fact, not to fill the gap with something plausible.
The rules we don't break.
Every system we build is held to the same rules as our own. They are enforced in code and in review, not kept in a slide.

A check passes on evidence, never on silence.
A guard only passes when it can show it ran. A check that succeeds because nothing complained is worse than no check at all.

Nothing derived is ever stored as fact.
Whether something is still valid is worked out when it is used. A stored flag goes stale in the direction that reads “valid”.

The source outranks the summary.
A rule is checked against the text of the law or the file format it comes from, never only against our own description of it.

An external validator is part of done.
Where an official tool exists to check the output, passing it is a condition of finishing, not a formality afterwards.

Every model call is accounted for.
Each call goes through one gateway, with its cost recorded against the run and the company it served.

Silence is never healthy.
A part of the system that has gone quiet shows as unknown until a record says otherwise, never as fine.
We are our own first client.
Dephrast runs its own operations on the platform it sells. Our finance and sales departments were the first built on it, under the same gates, the same rules and the same record we build for clients, so every decision in the product is one we have had to live with ourselves.
